Is homosexuality inconsistent with christianity? To some pundits, it seems like an obvious answer: homosexuality is inconsistent with christianity. Being gay means living in sin or living under the rules of Satan. But I think this is more of a political stance than it is the religious teachings of Jesus Christ, our saviour. It seems to me that Jesus taught about love and acceptance of everyone. There is nothing in the bible that says Jesus hates homosexuals. Jesus accepts everyone, regardless of their race, gender, or sexuality. Throughout history, I believe certain political groups have used religion unfairly to exclude groups and to justify hatred and discrimination.

This is certainly not the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The students of Jesus – that is, you and me – should live by his teachings and accept everyone regardless of their sexual orientation. As a Christian and “out” DJ, I am often asked of this apparent contradiction. The question does not bother me as I enjoy the discussion about the openness of Jesus Christ and how He accepts everyone.

When I tell people that I am gay, I worry most that my sexual orientation is what will define me in their eyes, as opposed to my actions or the fact that I am just a human being like everyone else. When the label is put on me as, “oh, that gay Christian D.J.,” it lowers me below the human level, and that truly hurts. This was especially difficult in Latin America where I am from because of the stereotypes of machismo that permeate throughout that society.

But Jesus is what keeps me away from those obstacles because I know He believes in me and that is all – truly all – that matters.

A lot of people have asked me about ASPH FOREVER! ASPH FOREVER! is a movement started in 2001 by a group of straight edge Christian musicians in San Antonio Texas. APSH FOREVER! has youth ministers all over the world spreading the message of abstinence, piety, soberness, and humbleness in a Christian fashion and in an open fashion that is respectiful to all races, genders, origins, nationalities, and sexual orientations.

Hey everybody. My name is DJ Christian Bermudez and welcome to my blog. I am a progressive Christian deejay spreading the word of God every chance I can get along with my brother Steve.

You may be thinking, “Christian deejay?” What’s up with that? Is this a joke? Is this guy some kind of religious nut?

Hardly.

I make my own electronic music and splice in hymns. I make music that people can dance heavy to, but I do it with the love of Jesus. I also live a lifestyle of abstinence, piety, soberness, and humbleness. This is the APSH creed that I have promised myself to since I was 19. I’m 24 now and going strong.

I have deejayed all over the world. When I was 18 and started deejaying in my home country of Venezuela, I was heavy into drugs, booze, and promiscuity. I didn’t know any better because that was the scene. Everyone I played for was deep into this too. I loved the attention and the travel as I became better known. Playing shows in Paris and Amsterdam and Berlin when you’re 18 and impressionable is WILD! Meeting up with famous deejays that you listened to.

But then all that changed in a quick instant when I was in a coma for 3 days after ODing and nearly dying after a speed ball. It was during my recovery in the hospital that I had a lot of time to THINK and REFLECT about why I was put on this earth. I met a mentor, Brother Chris, and he showed me the Bible and Church and the power of prayer.

I realized then that I had a mission in life. I had to follow ASPH FOREVER! and to spread the word of God through my MUSIC!

And that’s how my participation in the progressive Christian trance movement began and since then we’ve been going strong! I’ve recruited my younger brother Steve to follow ASPH FOREVER! and here we are, spinning beats and sharing our music, but with the love of Christ in our beats!
